South King County residents will soon have a new, expanded place to drop off recycling and household hazardous waste as King County marks the opening of a modern recycling and transfer station in Algona.

King County Executive Girmay Zahilay joined elected officials and community members Thursday to celebrate the completion of the South County Recycling and Transfer Station, which will serve communities in and around Algona, Auburn, Federal Way and Pacific.

The facility is expected to increase recycling capacity and provide a permanent drop-off location for household hazardous waste.

The new station, at 35101 W. Valley Highway S. in Algona, replaces the neighboring Algona Transfer Station that was built in the 1960s.

King County says the new site is powered mostly by renewable energy and is the first facility of its kind to earn Salmon-Safe certification for habitat improvements.

County officials describe the project as an example of efforts to increase equitable service access in South King County while building energy-efficient public infrastructure that provides community resources and improves the surrounding natural environment.

King County says it is the county’s largest capital project delivered this year.
