Two separate shootings in Seattle have renewed questions about the city’s response to gun violence after a violent summer. On Sunday, In Seattle’s Yesler Terrace

Two separate shootings in Seattle over the weekend have underlined the city’s response to gun crimes after a violent summer.

On Sunday in Seattle’s Yesler Terrace neighborhood, paramedics treated a 17-year-old boy who had been shot. He was stable when he was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

The shooting happened in the same neighborhood where Mayor Katie Wilson was evacuated from an event earlier this year after gunfire struck the community center where the event was being held.

On Saturday, police found a crashed vehicle in Seattle’s Rainier Valley with a man and woman inside who had been shot. The woman died at the scene, and the man later died at a hospital.

Investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting. No one is in custody, and police said they are not looking for an outstanding suspect at this time.

The shootings follow three separate shooting incidents in Seattle within 24 hours over Labor Day weekend, and the unsolved shooting connected to the Bite of Seattle festival.

Wilson is working to implement a nearly five-page gun violence reduction plan.

She said the strategy includes better coordination between the city’s CARE Department and the Seattle Police Department, along with continued investments in youth and families.

“The core change is integration, better integration between our CARE department, our police department,” Wilson said.

Wilson also said hiring at the Seattle Police Department remains ongoing.

Her plan includes expanding bike patrols in certain areas.

Seattle City Councilmember Maritza Rivera criticized the proposal, saying she was “underwhelmed” and that it appeared to continue strategies the city has already used.
