Marysville police seized 42 dogs from a utility trailer after officers discovered what the department described as severe breeding-hoarding conditions.

The dogs were seized Aug. 31 and identified as West Highland white terriers, also known as Westies, according to the Marysville Police Department.

Police said the dogs were found inside a cramped utility trailer outfitted with makeshift partitions, stacked kennels and a plastic storage tub containing young puppies.

Many of the dogs were matted, soaked in urine and covered in feces, with some showing signs of medical distress, according to police.

The dogs ranged in age from about 4 weeks to 4 years old. None had been spayed or neutered.

All 42 dogs were taken to a nearby shelter, where staff vaccinated, microchipped and weighed them before placing them in clean enclosures.

Police said more information about adopting the dogs will be released pending medical evaluations.

Marysville police have recommended 42 counts of second-degree animal cruelty. Police did not provide additional information about who could face the recommended charges.
