Homes and businesses within a 500-foot radius were evacuated as a precaution.
Emergency crews evacuated homes and businesses Monday after a tanker truck carrying liquid hydrogen overturned in Bellingham, fire officials said.
The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. near 30th Street and Taylor Avenue, according to the Bellingham Fire Department.
Officials said the tanker was traveling through a curve when its tires went onto a soft shoulder, causing the truck to overturn.
The driver was not injured. A co-driver was taken to a hospital and has since been released. No other injuries were reported.
Homes and businesses within a 500-foot radius were evacuated as a precaution. Officials said there was no leak of liquid hydrogen, though a small amount of diesel fuel and oil leaked from the overturned truck.
Bellingham Fire and Police, the Washington State Patrol, a hazardous materials team, Puget Sound Energy, and the Washington Department of Ecology responded to the scene.
As of 9:30 p.m., crews were clearing the road and expected it to reopen by 10 p.m. Power was also being restored to a small area around the crash site.
