A 66-year-old Olympia man died Saturday afternoon after witnesses said he fell hundreds of feet from a switchback trail on Sauk Mountain in Skagit County.
Skagit 911 received multiple emergency calls at about 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 from hikers who reported seeing a person fall from the trail on Sauk Mountain in the Concrete area.
The hiker was identified as a 66-year-old man from Olympia. Witnesses estimated he fell about 800 to 1,000 feet after going over the edge of the trail.
Hikers in the area located the man and directed responding fire personnel to his location. Emergency personnel began lifesaving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Because of the remote location and difficult terrain, Washington State Parks personnel and helicopter resources assisted Skagit County Search and Rescue with the recovery operation.
The search and rescue mission and recovery were completed at about 8 p.m.
