Bright, artist-designed crosswalks are now part of a new pilot program in Bellevue, and the city is asking residents to weigh in on whether the colorful designs make intersections safer and are practical to maintain.

The City of Bellevue has installed four painted crosswalks as part of its “Creative Crosswalks” pilot program.

The city said it wants feedback from community members on whether the crosswalks improve safety, are easy to maintain, and whether the community enjoys them.

The Creative Crosswalks are a partnership between the city’s Transportation and Community Development departments.

The city said the pilot program is meant to explore how art might improve safety around intersections, including whether the “bright, energetic crosswalks” increase drivers’ attention, make people in the crosswalk more visible, or could be distracting.

The crosswalk paintings were installed on one side of the intersection at:

  • 164th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 24th Street
  • 124th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Eighth Street
  • 132nd Avenue Northeast and Bel-Red Road
  • 106th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 10th Street

The city said it is seeking input from people who have “walked, rolled or driven” through the intersections with the new treatments. A short, five-minute survey is open until Nov. 30.

According to the city, the artistic installations were paid for by a U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All grant and funds from the Community Development Arts and Culture program.

For the artwork, the city opened a call for entries, allowing each artist to use up to six colors in their designs.

The city said two Puget Sound artists, Nikita Ares and Kenji Stoll, were selected from many entries, and each created two designs.
