At a first appearance hearing Wednesday, a judge set $5 million bail for the 43-year-old man accused of killing a woman believed to be his mother, and then stabbing a police officer in Renton on Monday.
The judge found probable cause for his arrest in the Renton murder investigation and in the investigation of an officer stabbing.
Neighbors were in a state of shock after a woman was found stabbed to death, and a Renton police officer was attacked at Cedar River Terrace apartments.
Officers were dispatched to the building after 911 callers reported hearing breaking glass and other suspicious noises. When they arrived and saw a man in the area, he immediately ran, police said.
During a short chase, the man stabbed a 24-year-old officer in the face with a knife, according to the Renton Police Department (RPD). The officer was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
After the suspect was taken into custody with the help of a Taser, police returned to the location to resume their investigation.
Police discovered and followed a trail of blood that led them to an apartment unit where they found a deceased woman, believed to have been around 80-years old, according to the first appearance document.
She had visible injuries, including stab wounds, and had significant blood loss on the floor around her, according to investigators.

At the hearing Wednesday, the court found probable cause for the man's arrest on an investigation of Murder in the Second Degree – Domestic Violence.
The court also found probable cause for his arrest on an investigation of Assault in the First Degree for the assault on the officer.
After hearing from both sides, the court set bail at $5 million, the amount King County prosecutors requested. The suspect remains in the King County Jail on the bail amount set by the first appearance court.
The suspect's name is being withheld pending formal charges.
The first appearance document presented Wednesday is available because the court found probable cause for his arrest in the police investigation.
A first appearance hearing following an arrest is not the same as what’s required by law for a felony charging decision, which has a higher burden of proof.
In the days after a first appearance hearing, police investigators routinely send a case referral to prosecutors for a charging decision.
King County prosecutors do not have that felony case referral from police now but anticipate getting it from police investigators by Thursday, Aug. 6, for a charging decision.
Defendants are innocent until proven guilty in court.
