As wildfires burn hundreds of thousands of acres in eastern Washington, crews in western Washington also responded to fires of their own.

A brush fire broke out in Renton in a field between the Shadowhawk Condominiums and the Royal Hills Apartments, beneath power lines.

The fire sparked up around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Renton Fire Department and other responding agencies, including Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority, sent brush trucks and other fire apparatus to the scene.

Crews in yellow coats were able to get a grasp on the flames in under two hours, and the fire was put out after burning a significant chunk of hillside.

Officials said it was the third brush fire in the same area within weeks. Fire officials said the cause is usually “mischief.”

The fire burned along a hillside that borders nearby apartments. Parts of the slope showed a freshly burned area from a few days earlier, and an older burn scar from another fire a few weeks ago.

With burn bans in effect and dry conditions throughout King County, a battalion chief said brush fires require a robust response, pulling units from around the region to ensure safety.

Officials also said they were thankful to have support from other agencies, even on a smaller fire with less fuel to help it grow.

Fire crews said the work will continue as summer conditions persist.
