Search and rescue teams have recovered the body of Neil Gehring from Olympic National Park after an effort that focused on the northwest slope of Mount Appleton.
Gehring left the Madison Falls Trailhead in ONP on Aug. 31 and intended to spend one night during his cross-country traverse from Boulder Lake to Appleton Pass.

However, the 26-year-old was reported overdue at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 2, and teams began searching for him soon after.
Olympic National Park said teams recovered Gehring on the evening of Sept. 13. Searchers located him after receiving and analyzing additional cell phone location data.
His remains were transferred to the Clallam County Coroner’s Office. No additional information was released.
