Drivers in Bellevue will need to slow down on many neighborhood streets as the city begins lowering the speed limit from 25 mph to 20 mph on local access roads.

The new signs are going up starting Monday, Aug. 24, and Bellevue says enforcement will begin immediately once the signs are in place.

The first phase will focus on neighborhoods in the North End, including northeast Bellevue, Crossroads, Lake Hills, Bridle Trails, Wilburton and northwest Bellevue.

City officials said the work is expected to take about a month, with the South End to follow after.

Bellevue officials say the change is aimed at slowing traffic on local streets where residents have repeatedly raised concerns about speeding. The city has already tested 20 mph limits in a few neighborhoods and says drivers did slow down after the signs were changed.

The speed limit reduction has been in the works since October 2024, when the Bellevue City Council approved the ordinance. The city says the move is part of its broader Vision Zero effort to eliminate fatal and serious crashes on city streets by 2030.
