Two young men were killed in a shooting Monday morning near the Interstate 5 overpass on South 272nd Street in Kent, police said.

Kent and Des Moines police officers were dispatched at about 10:43 a.m. to S. 272nd Street near the I-5 overpass after multiple reports of a shooting. Callers to 911 reported that two people had been shot and that the suspect car had fled the area.

Officers arrived and found two victims inside a vehicle, then pulled them out to provide medical aid. Puget Sound Fire and King County Medic One personnel also responded and provided emergency medical treatment, but both victims died from their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims were described as two young men who appeared to be in their late teens or early 20s. Detectives are working to confirm their identities.

Witnesses told police they were stopped in traffic when they heard multiple gunshots near the overpass. Some witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored sedan pull alongside the victims’ vehicle and someone from the sedan fire multiple rounds into the victims’ vehicle before fleeing.

The suspect vehicle was last seen traveling southbound on I-5.

Police said initial information indicates the shooting was targeted and not a random act of violence.

Kent police detectives have taken over the investigation and are working to confirm the description of the suspect or suspects and the vehicle involved. Detectives are processing evidence, including available video from the area, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kent Police Tip Line at 253-856-5808 or email KPDTipLine@kentwa.gov. If a tip is urgent, call 911. Media inquiries can be directed to Assistant Chief Jarod Kasner at jkasner@kentwa.gov.
