As students across western Washington wrap up summer and prepare to head back to school, many are turning to online searches for help with homework and ways to cut costs on supplies.
In Seattle, the No. 1 searched topic for homework help is AP World History, according to Google Trends. Google has created tools aimed at helping students study, including Gemini, which is designed to be used as a guided learning tool rather than an “answer machine.”
“What Gemini can actually do is create a study guide for any topic that you want, so you can say, ‘Hey, I’m going into this World History class this is what we’re covering, make me a study guide, and it can go ahead and do that as simple as one search or one prompt and it can do it for the ACT, too,” said Luma Hamade, a Google Trends expert.
Gemini can also help with writing by checking for run-on sentences and looking for specific grammar issues. It can create practice tests as well.
Students are also searching for ways to save money on back-to-school supplies. Hamade said “conversation search” can help shoppers find deals by using a more interactive, back-and-forth approach in the search bar.
“You’re able to search for deals as easily as saying ‘Hey, this is too expensive, help me find a deal within this price range and find me five different options within that price range, as an example,’” Hamade said. “Gemini, or what we call AI mode in search, which is again just having that conversation in your search bar will go ahead and give that to you and what it can also do is export it to a Google Doc, so let’s say you want to get very organized and have it create some sort of Google Doc with options for backpacks, options for pencils, options for all sorts of supplies that you need, it can do that all in one click and you can just review the document from there.”
Among the top searched items are a stainless steel lunch box, Hello Kitty backpacks and K-pop Demon Hunters school supplies.
