Tooth decay remains one of the most common chronic childhood illnesses in the United States, and it's costing kids time in the classroom.

Children miss 34 million school hours every year because of dental emergencies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cost is a common reason families delay pediatric dental visits. For uninsured and underinsured families, free and low-cost care is available through community health centers and nonprofit organizations.

“If lack of insurance is a barrier or cost is a barrier for parents I would definitely look into community organizations that will help you and work with you,” said Ashley Bass, Director of Education and Outreach for Kids Smiles.

Families who missed a child’s summer dental appointment are encouraged to schedule one now.

It can also help to know the signs a child may be having a dental problem, including avoiding food on one side of the mouth.

Sensitivity to cold drinks or reluctance to eat hard or crunchy foods can also indicate an issue.
