Families in Federal Way will be able to get children ready for the first day of school with free haircuts and a community party at Town Square Park.
More than 50 hairstylists and barbers are expected to volunteer on Tuesday, Aug. 25, to provide free back-to-school haircuts from noon to 7 p.m. The event, now in its fourth year, is a partnership among local salons, businesses and the city of Federal Way, with organizers aiming to complete 500 haircuts in one day.
Susan Greenside, owner of Castaway Salon, said the event can make a difference for students who may not have had a recent trim.
“They haven't had haircuts since the year before, so especially in our community having this event for kids, so that they feel good, they show up to school, they have a haircut, and they look fresh and ready it gives a big confidence boost to kids,” Greenside said.
Kristin Speakman, owner of Bella Red Salon, said about 50 volunteers had signed up, including barbers who return year after year.
“We have about 50 signed up, not just hairstylists, but barbers, too. Barbers are really popular every year. We have barbers that come back every year. We're hoping to do 500. There's about 18,000 students in the Federal Way School District, 500 would be a good goal,” Speakman said.
Organizers also plan to turn the haircut event into a celebration, with a DJ, magician, ice cream and more.
