As the nation marks 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks, The Salvation Army is urging people to remember what it calls the simplest lasting lesson of that day: show up for one another.
The organization said first responders and survivors at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville carried “a weight none of us can fully imagine.” The Salvation Army said it stood beside them from the first day and for years afterward, working to be whatever helped them keep going.
When The Salvation Army asked its own responders what helped most, the organization said they all pointed to the same thing: small acts of kindness.
Now, 25 years later, The Salvation Army is asking people across the country to “Be That Something” for someone facing hardship.
Commissioner Merle Heatwole encourages people to embody the lessons learned, saying one small act of kindness can make an immense difference for someone.
